Biography

Robert S. Hackett is a dedicated criminal defense attorney and has successfully represented clients in both the state and federal courts throughout his career.

Mr. Hackett was born and raised in the City of Detroit and attended the Detroit Public Schools. After graduation from high school, he attended the University of Michigan, where he received a BA in History and Political Science.

During his senior year at the University of Michigan, he interned in the state office of the American Civil Liberties Union, where he was sensitized to the power and potential abuses of government and was fortunate to have been mentored by some of the sharpest legal minds in the state. After graduation from the U of M, he accepted a full-time position with the ACLU and decided to attend law school after realizing the contribution he could make with a legal education. Mr. Hackett graduated from the Thomas M. Cooley Law School in 1995 and was licensed to practice law that same year.

After 5 years in private civil and criminal practice, Mr. Hackett moved to Grand Rapids after accepting a position with the Office of the Federal Public Defender for the Western District of Michigan and for approximately 5 years was part of a team that represented individuals charged with criminal offenses in the federal system. After leaving the FPD office, Mr. Hackett went back into private practice to concentrate mainly in the area of criminal defense at the state level.

Throughout his legal career, Mr. Hackett has been dedicated to representing persons accused of, and charged with, committing criminal offenses and is accomplished in obtaining favorable outcomes for his clients.

When not playing lawyer, Mr. Hackett enjoys spending time with his two teenage children and playing golf.
